All you need to know about earthquakes

This is an project I did for school.

What is an earthquake?

What is an earthquake you might ask. Well, it is a violently shaking movement of the earth that is caused by the big blocks (plates) deep under the earth's surface. Earthquakes are really shaky and can be scary. If you get to know more about earthquakes you'll know what to do when one happens.

Where do earthquakes happen?

Earthquakes happen along faults. A fault is a peace of land that cracks along the ground. The San Andreas fault is a well known fault in California.

Describing The Different Types Of Waves

The different types of waves are primary waves (P waves) and secondary ways (S waves). The P wave comes before the S wave and can travel though solids, liquids, and gases. As P waves pass through a material, the particles of the material are slightly pushed together and pulled apart. The P wave can travel at about 5 km per second.

As S waves pass through a material, the material's particles are shaken up and down and from side to side. S waves cause more damage.

How are earthquakes measured?

Well they are measured by things called seismographs. These seismographs are everywhere in the world measuring 24/7. They record every movement of the earth. When an earthquake happens, the seismographs will measured it. That is also how scientists find out how big an earthquake is.

Describing earthquake magnitude

A very powerful earthquake can release more energy than 1 million weak earthquakes combined. The earthquake magnitude scales give scientist and engineers a simple way to describe this huge range in energy. When the earth moves the scale draws little lines that tell the earthquake's magnitude. This scale is called the Richter scale. It was invented by two scientists in California during the 1930's. The scientists names were Charles Richter and Beno Gutenberg. The new versions of that scale are still being made today. The new scales are more accurate than in the past. The magnitude goes like this:

0-3.9 rarely noticed

4.0-4.9 slight damage

5.0-5.9 some structures damaged

6.0-6.9 major damage to structures

7.0-7.9 some well built structures destroyed

8.0 and above major to total destruction.

The different types of damage that earthquakes cause

The damage from an earthquake can be minor or severe depending on the size of the earthquake. Earthquake damage can include cracked roads and pipes. Buildings can be badly damaged or knocked down. The aftershocks are less powerful than the actual earthquake. There is another type of bad thing that happens after an earthquake happens. It is liquefaction. Liquefaction can be bad because it is like quicksand and can sink an entire building.

Earthquake safety tips

Get an earthquake safety kit. When there is an earthquake, you can be prepared.

Get an earthquake kit that will have enough food and water to last you three days. Don't get frozen food. It won't last long.

Identify a safe spot in your house so you will not get hurt.

Don't try to get to another building.

Call someone who lives in another town so they can tell people that you are safe and not dead or hurt.

A great day

Today was the best day ever. It was the best day ever because I had no homework. The other thing that was good today was the fact that one of my friend's mom was a substitute. She helped me do all my work in school today. Then when I was finished she corrected it. Now I have so much free time to do whatever I want to do. I am so happy today. Are you happy today?

I went to Legoland

My family and I went to Legoland yesterday. When we got there we had to wait in traffic for an hour and a half. We had to wait that long to pay to park. When we got in to the park we tried to win a prize by playing a slot machine. Then we went on some rides. Next we went to lunch. Then we went on some more rides. Then we saw Mini Land. Then we went to Fun Town. Next we rode a roller coaster. Then we left. Finally we went to Roberto's and ate.

Legoland, here I come

This Saturday I'm going to Legoland. It will be so much fun. I really don't know what I am going to do first. Just thinking about it makes me so excited.

It will be such a long drive down there. Before I get to the park I am going to eat.

Fun Fact:
Did you know that Roblox is a Lego game?

I had the day off today

Today I got the day off. It was fun. First I woke up. Then I had breakfast. Then I played video games. Next I did a little laundry. Then I went outside and played tag and zombie boy. (Zombie boy is like tag only with a different name.) Next I came inside and rested for a while. Now I am writing this blog. Soon I will have dinner. After that I will go get ice cream.

Science night!!!

Last night I was at science night. Science night is where you go and experience the world in science. At science night I went and experienced all the cool science stuff that you can't see anywhere else. First I went to CSI for Space Robots. There I went and watched a video of a future rover landing on mars.

Then I went to the Magic behind the Motion. That is where you watch fun types of robots. I liked the one that is controlled with a Wii nunchuk controller.

Then I went to the book fair. When I went in there it was crowded. When my dad bought me a book, I had to fill out a little form for a drawing. Then today I won $10.00.

The recent funny thing I did in Roblox

There are a lot of funny things I have done in Roblox. The most resent thing I did was two days ago. I was in a stage where I had to fly a plane to other islands. I was taking off when another plane was landing. At this point I had no idea that the other plane was coming. The air control had not yet cleared the other plane for landing. But they had cleared me for take off. Then a few moments before the other plane hit me, the pilot said "Holy momma." Then he hit me. At first I did not know what had happened. So I just ended up seeing white stuff at the front of my plane. Then I zoomed in and saw the other plane had hit my plane head on. I was the pilot of my plane. No one was inside either plane at the time but the pilots. Then BOOM!!! The planes exploded. The blasts where so large that the other planes that where waiting at the boarding gates where totally gone. I was killed in the explosion. So was the other pilot. The only good thing was that I was brought back to life. But my plane wasn't. I blame the air traffic control.

Visit Roblox.com

Visit Roblox today!

Roblox is a place where you can build and play however you want. You can be chased by zombies or fly a plane or rocket. There are lots of obstacle courses. If you can get through the obstacle courses you can be a VIP. Roblox can change the way you build. Roblox is like Lego's but is not Lego's. If you become a member of Roblox builders club (only a couple of dollars a month, see the site for details) you can make way more stages and get a cool hat. I am not a member of builders club so I only get to make 1 stage. I know it sucks, doesn't it? Well, when you get in Roblox (you will need a Microsoft powered computer), click on "people" and send 22817 a friend request. I'll see you there.
